Newmarket Town Plate
The Vaughan family, including Racehorse Trainer Tim Vaughan, wife Abbi and son/daughter Ed and Grace (cheered on at the sidelines by youngest son, Henry), took part in the prestigious Newmarket Town Plate Horse Race in August 2025, whilst raising money for the blood cancer charity, Myeloma UK.
The Newmarket Town Plate is a historic race which has been run at the Home of Horseracing at Newmarket since 1666. The only remaining race run on part of the original Round Course (which starts on the National Stud grounds), the Town Plate was instigated by King Charles II, who also won the first running and became the first and only reigning monarch to win a race! The King stated that the race should be run 'forever’, and Newmarket Racecourse remain committed to honouring his wishes.
The race is run over a stamina-sapping three-and-three-quarter miles and is certainly not for the faint hearted! It is a true test of fitness and determination for both equine and human participants, which finishes as you cross the line on the beautiful July Course. A privilege normally reserved only for the professionals.
Once, one of the most prestigious races in the land, the Town Plate is now a pinnacle of glorious historical eccentricity, competed for by true amateurs, and brings down the curtains on the summer racing season at Newmarket.
There was some fun inter-family rivalry going on prior to the race, with Tim keen to win, however, on the day the family finished in a respectable 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place with Abbi taking the runner up position and claimed the title of “Vaughan family winner”. They thoroughly enjoyed the day and were delighted to take part in a race as a family – a situation that hasn’t occurred before, with four family members all in the same race.
Thanks to our supporters on the day, we had a fantastic time!
