Wings Of Smoke is now firmly into the veteran stage, but the veteran remains as good as ever and, at the age of 11, he recorded his sixth career success at Taunton yesterday.
Ridden for just the second time by Alan Johns, who had finished second on him at Doncaster last February, he was held up in the first half of the race, in which they went a very good gallop considering the heavy ground.
It proved to be an incident-packed contest, with the front-runner falling in the back straight and the subsequent clear leader coming down at the second last, giving Wings Of Smoke the opportunity to get his head in front again.
He is unlikely to suffer at the hands of the handicapper and hopefully can make a bold bid to follow up the win on his next outing. Congratulations to his owners Dave and Jodie Pearn!
