Grand Lahou has plenty of ability and he showed his class in the selling hurdle, making all and winning well on his first start in the bottom grade, providing Richard Johnson with the first leg of a double on the night. He looks capable of winning again in similar company next time.
Hawkhill has had a tremendous spring/summer, winning twice in novice company before a couple of excellent performances in defeat in competitive handicaps. He fully deserved to get his head in front again and was presented with a golden opportunity to do so, being sent off 2-11 favourite for a four-runner novice. As with Grand Lahou 30 minutes earlier, Richard Johnson made all the running on Hawkhill and he duly notched up his third win over hurdles in great style.
Our final runner of the evening, Skylancer, was returning from a break and, having disappointed on his final start of 2011 and not previously shown a liking for soft ground, he looked to face a stiff task in the 2m4f handicap hurdle. However, under a strong ride from Michael Byrne, he responded well to pressure up the home straight to record his first win since 2009 on just his fourth start for the yard. All three are pictured on their return to Pant Wilkin this morning (from left, Skylancer, Grand Lahou and Hawkhill).
We now boast an impressive 37% strike-rate at Perth (13-35) and hopefully further success will follow at their next meetings on Saturday 18th and Tuesday 21st August.
