We have acquired some really promising young hurdlers in recent weeks and I was very pleased with the performance of Swampfire on his first start for the yard at Exeter yesterday.

Rated 99 at his peak on the level in Ireland, he had some good form to his name over hurdles there and was purchased privately after failing to handle bottomless conditions at the Listowel Festival in September.

Always prominent in the 2m1f novice hurdle, he was headed two out but responded really gamely after the last, making up three or four lengths in the final 100 yards to win narrowly.

So long as the handicapper doesn’t take a dim view, we will aim him at the 2m, 0-125 handicap hurdle at Cheltenham on 17th November.
