We sent out a strong team to Ffos Las yesterday, with five runners in four races, followed by two at the evening meeting up at Wetherby.

Though I was delighted with the performances at Ffos Las, the results didn’t quite go our way, with our runners filling the runners-up position in all four contests!

Kack Handed appears in the form of his life at the moment and he fought on gamely to the line in the handicap chase, only to get caught in the final strides.

Thelobstercatcher is getting his act together over fences and he posted another solid effort in the novice chase, just getting touched off by a very progressive rival.

Elsafeer was another to lead over the last yet, despite keeping on really well, he just lost out in a four-way finish. However, it did represent a return to form after a disappointing effort last time and there should be an opening for him in the coming weeks.

We ran two in the bumper, and though Sensible And Fair failed to show what he is capable of on debut, Bucking The Trend shaped with plenty of promise on his first start under rules, having won a point-to-point at Machen for Abbi in really good style. He was unlucky to bump into a very well-bred Henderson newcomer, but with 9 lengths back to the third he looks a strong contender to win his bumper next time.

Thankfully, having had four seconds down at Ffos Las, Stonethrower made no mistake of what looked a good opportunity on his chasing bow/seasonal reappearance, winning well at Wetherby despite jumping markedly right on the second circuit. He is better going the other way around and he is likely to come on for the run, so he looks an exciting novice chaser for the months ahead.

Unfortunately, the double was not landed later on the card, with Miracle House, who had looked sure to collect, hitting the final flight and just getting pipped by Dj Milan under an inspired ride by Jason Maguire. Though it was frustrating to have five seconds on the day (and four of those by under a length!), it is encouraging to see the horses continue to be extremely competitive and hopefully all five can gain compensation for their narrow defeats next time!
