A really good card at Newbury on Saturday and I am very much looking forward to running Saved By John and Tartak in the two feature handicap chases.
Saved By John is a progressive novice handicapper and, having finished a close second on his reappearance from six months off at Chepstow in January, he made all in very game fashion to win at Wincanton last time. I expect him to improve for the return to 2m4f and drying ground could well be in his favour too, so I am hopeful he can make a bold bid from the front in the Greatwood Gold Cup under Michael Byrne.
Tartak has been one of so many to have struggled on the prevailing heavy ground this winter and he will undoubtedly relish a return to the faster ground forecast for the weekend. 5th off a mark of 153 in last year’s Byrne Group Plate at the Cheltenham Festival, he is now down to a mark of 134 and I can see him running a big race in the veterans’ handicap chase.
