An impressive winner on his debut in an Irish point last year, King Rolfe is a lovely individual and I was delighted to see him get off the mark at the first time of asking over hurdles this term, winning in ready fashion at Stratford on Saturday under Aidan Coleman.
Given a patient ride, he made up his ground in good style and, when asked, put the race to bed in the style of a very nice prospect. A half-brother to the top-class racemare Feathard Lady, he has plenty of scope and, though he looks a chaser in the making, I hope there is plenty more to come from him this season.
I was very pleased with the comeback effort of Saved By John at Aintree, looking the winner entering the home straight but just seemed to get a little tired in the closing stages. I’m sure he will come on for the run and, given it was a competitive handicap chase and he was conceding 12lbs to the winner (with 16 lengths back to the third) it was a really good start to his season.
