Michael Byrne retires
Following seven seasons in Wales, Michael Byrne has taken the decision to retire from race riding and return home to Ireland.
Having joined Peter Bowen as an amateur in 2009, Michael joined the team at Pant Wilkin in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of the leading young riders in the country, recording 19 winners in both the 11/12 and 2012/13 campaigns.
An excellent horseman, Michael has been a real asset both at home and on the racecourse in recent years, with his 34 winners in 2013/14 ensuring he finished runner-up in the conditional jockeys’ title race that year.
He struck up very good relationships with yard favourites Wings Of Smoke (pictured above, 2 wins) and First Fandango (pictured left, 3 wins), whilst other career highlights included several Channel 4 winners, amongst them Carole’s Destrier and Buck Magic for trainer Neil Mulholland.
With 96 winners under rules, 12 in Irish points and a handful in points over here, Michael felt the time was right to retire, as he is very keen to start on the next chapter of his career back in Ireland, pinhooking and breaking in young stock. We wish him a huge amount of success in his new venture!
