It has been an incredible period for the yard with our highest ever tally of winners in a week taking us to the top of the Trainers Championship, with the victory of Stewarts House in the feature Listed handicap chase at Newton Abbot on his first start for us quickly moving us nearly £18,000 clear at the top of the table!
There have been some excellent performances throughout the week and I am obviously delighted with the form of all the team, which I can only hope continues in a similar vein in what promises to be a busy week ahead!
There are not too many big prizes at this time of year so the races do tend to be particularly competitive when there is good prize-money on offer. The Listed handicap chase at Newton Abbot on Sunday was no exception and it was a brilliant effort from Stewarts House to win on his first start for the yard. Always handy in a strongly-run race, he kept galloping and showed a terrific attitude to repel several challengers. I am delighted for his owners Steve Clarke and Dom Wallis (who hopefully managed to tune in to commentary from his holiday base on the Isle of Skye!) who are such good suppporters of mine; Steve is pictured below (many thanks to racecourse photographer Fiona Crawford for the photos) picking up the rather large trophy! Looking ahead, Stewarts House is now likely to head to Cheltenham in October.
Where one winner has come another has quickly followed this week and that was once again the case yesterday, with Green Du Ciel getting off the mark in the conditional jockeys maiden hurdle under Michael Byrne, who is getting plenty of plaudits at present. He was unlucky to bump into a very useful rival at the track last time but on this occasion was far too good for the opposition and won in very good style for his owners Hanford’s Chemists. He is certainly capable of further success this season.
