Jean Genie (Fr)
2016 grey gelding by Turgeon (USA) ex Lady Koko (GB) (Kapgarde (Fr))
This scopey three year old (he is around the 16’2 mark) has shown plenty of promise in six starts in France this year, three over hurdles and the last three over fences, the latest of them at Auteuil at the end of September.
Seventh on his debut at Auteuil in the spring, he wasn’t beaten too far when sixth on his next start there in the Prix Champaubert, form that worked out very well, with the first three home all subsequent black-type performers – no surprise, given it is traditionally one of the hottest juvenile hurdles of the season, with three of last year’s first four now Graded winners. He finished fourth on his next outing in May, beaten just over two lengths for second (the wide-margin winner finished runner-up in a hot Listed chase on his next start).
He ran creditably on his first two starts over fences, the second of which can be upgraded, as he stumbled on the flat and almost lost his jockey just as the pace was quickening. He jumped very well over fences around Auteuil last time out, but just looks in need of a stronger test of stamina.
We bought one from the same trainer (and same owner) last year, Le Milos, who had been unplaced in all five starts at the time, but has since won two for us and looks a lovely prospect for this season and beyond. He came to the UK with a lower rating than Jean Genie and certainly didn’t have the same level of form already in the book.
A first foal, his dam won four times and is a half-sister to a Listed hurdle winner at Auteuil (also by Turgeon), and to another 135-rated gelding. The grandam was a very useful, 140+ rated hurdler, so it is a very strong National Hunt pedigree, headed by a top-class sire and damsire.
He has been given a confirmed mark of 123 by the handicapper here and that already puts him within a few pounds of getting in the Fred Winter at the Festival, whilst longer-term his physical scope and pedigree suggest he could make up into a high-class performer in the seasons ahead.
There is a final 10% share available at £2250 + VAT, + monthly training fees from 1st December 2019.
