Kalanisi (1)

by Kalanisi (Ire)

2016 bay gelding by Kalanisi (Ire) ex Carrigeen Lonicera (Ire) (Old Vic (GB))

This good-looking, scopey three year old is a son of the proven Grade 1 sire Kalanisi and, furthermore, is bred on the best cross with that sire, being out of an Old Vic mare.  That nick has produced some of Kalanisi’s best performers, including this year’s Grade 1 winning novice chaser Kalashnikov and high-class hurdler Brain Power, who won the Grade 2 International Hurdle at Cheltenham in December.  In fact, progeny of Old Vic mares fill three of the top eight Kalanisi runners on RPRs.

There is also a particularly strong damside.  Just a second foal, he is out of a bumper-winning mare who is a three-parts sister to this year’s dual Grade 1 winner Minella Indo (who took the Albert Bartlett) as well as to Grade 2-winning chaser Benatar.  Her half-sisters include a 133-rated mare and the granddam was a herself a black-type performer.

I thought he was one of the very best physical models in the sale and was well prepared to go considerably higher than what we paid for him – I believe he represents absolutely outstanding value.

He has now been broken in and after a short break, will come back into training in early autumn.  On pedigree and looks, he should come to hand early enough and I would be very optimistic of him making his debut in a bumper in the spring.  He has all the attributes to make up into a high-class National Hunt performer and I am delighted to have him in the yard.
