Brandy James

2015 bay gelding by Motivator (GB) ex Bold Classic (USA) (Pembroke (USA))

A scopey, athletic individual, this five year old showed a good level of form over hurdles for his previous connections and looks an exciting addition to the yard.

He looks unlucky not to have already got his head in front over hurdles, but that works very much to our advantage, as he is able to run in maiden and then novice company for the entire season. Third on his debut over timber last term (behind subsequent Grade 3 winner Chief Justice), he bumped into useful performers when runner-up on his next two outings, before finishing fourth behind Christopher Wood (rated 140) and Zizaneur (rated 133) at Newbury.

On his most recent outing over hurdles, again at Newbury, he finished a good sixth in a £40,000 handicap hurdle, the form of which was franked in no uncertain terms, with the runner-up winning his next two (including a £40,000 contest at Ascot) and several of those in behind winning since. You can put a line through his two runs on the flat since, as he patently didn’t stay the 2m5f on the flat at Pontefract (having travelled well), before not handling the fibresand surface at Southwell last time.

A very well-bred individual, his sire Motivator was responsible for this year’s Triumph Hurdle winner Pentland Hills, whilst he is himself a three-parts brother to Irish Derby third Festive Cheer, and out of a half-sister to five black-type performers, including 1000 Guineas winner Speciosa and Graded hurdle winner Pivot Bridge.

He will be ready to run again in February 2020 and I hope he can get in towards the bottom of the weights in a couple of nice handicaps this spring.

He is exceptional value at just £15,000 + VAT.
