Only one runner on the card for us at Taunton yesterday, but the JP McManus-owned Fayette County is a horse we think quite a bit of and I was delighted to see him get off the mark at the second time of asking over hurdles.
Runner-up on his hurdling debut in a Carlisle novice, the form of which couldn’t have worked out any better, he looked to have an excellent chance of going one better yesterday but, in contrast to his previous run, he was very keen throughout the first half of the race, especially give the heavy ground.
However, despite being challenged at the top of the straight, Dougie Costello never had to get serious with him, the pair keeping on strongly to win very comfortably.
Lightly-raced for a seven year old, I am confident there is a good deal more to come from him and, though he is certainly an exciting chaser for next season, I hope he can go on to further success over hurdles this term.
