Dusky Raider

3yo grey gelding by Clodovil ex Rahila (Kalanisi)

A strong, athletic gelding and a lovely mover, this son of the excellent sire Clodovil is out of a Kalanisi mare and looks absolutely tailor-made for the jumping game.

Given his scope, it is no surprise that his previous connections decided just to get him handicapped with three runs over an inadequate trip at two, and he made really good progress last term, not being over-raced but winning two of his six starts in handicaps.

Off the mark over 1m6f at the end of May, where he showed a tremendously game attitude that will stand him in good stead over hurdles, he added another success a couple of starts later in August, again getting the better of a three-way tussle in the final furlong, and showing himself to be a thorough stayer in the process.

He is a lovely individual physically, but he definitely looks the type that can improve further and strengthen up, and it is no surprise to see that his full brother improved as a backend three year old and again in 2016.

His dam, by the National Hunt sire Kalanisi, is from a high-class flat family that includes four black-type performers on the level, as well as a 141-rated jumper, which gives us even more confidence that Dusky Raider can excel once sent hurdling this term.

Given the competitiveness of the market for hurdlers off the flat, we were delighted to be able to acquire him for 20,000gns (+sales costs) and he rates outstanding value, as his pedigree, form and physique suggest he can make up into a very useful hurdler this season.
