We sent two horses to Towcester yesterday and I was delighted to welcome back two winners, My Oh Mount Brown and Safferano.

A winner on his previous start at Sedgefield, My Oh Mount Brown had escaped a penalty for that success in a conditional/amateur event (ridden by Bradley Gibbs) and, with Michael Byrne on board, he looked to have a great chance of following up.

In front at the bottom of the hill, there was a protracted duel from there until the line with the runner-up and we had to endure a lengthy stewards enquiry before the win could be celebrated.  Congratulations to his owners Craig and Maureen Buckingham, who have several with us for the months ahead.

Safferano, a winning pointer in Ireland, has taken time so, following a disappointing novice season in 2012/13, it has been good to see him improve since a short break over the summer, his fifth at Newton Abbot in August followed by a battling success yesterday in the 2m4f handicap hurdle under a well-judged ride from Michael Byrne.

Settled well in rear in the early stages, he made relentless progress in the second half of the race and led only in the final few yards.  Though the front pair were clear and he is likely to go up a few pounds for the win, I am hopeful that the penny has dropped with him and there could be more to come.
