An 8,500gns purchase at the Tattersalls July Sale, Colonial Empire made an instant impact on his racecourse debut at Exeter yesterday, posting an impressive success in the concluding bumper under Charlie Price.
A son of Zoffany, he has plenty of stamina and class on his damside, being a half-brother to a useful flat stayer, out of a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner The Fugue.
He had been in training on the flat at two and three, but was unraced in that sphere and therefore looked an ideal candidate to run in bumpers. He has shown plenty of ability in his work at home and that was borne out on the track, as he travelled really strongly through the race. He was a little green when initially coming under pressure, but quickened really well in the final furlong to score by 10 lengths.
We will look for another bumper for him under a penalty in three weeks’ time and hopefully he can make a very bold bid to follow up yesterday’s success. Congratulations to his owners, Steve Grys and Mick O’Boyle!
